Neurodevelopment
and learning

Neurodevelopment is the set of processes through which the central nervous system (CNS), with the brain as its main organ, forms, develops and acquires its functions. This evolutionary process is progressive and is reflected in both structural and functional aspects. It begins during intrauterine life and continues to develop into adulthood.

However, it does not follow a constant pace: during the first years of life, the brain grows rapidly, undergoing numerous transformations and acquiring new skills. It is precisely during this early stage that development is most intense, but also most vulnerable.

This process is fundamental to the brain’s effective adaptation to its environment, and is influenced by genetic, biological and environmental factors. Phenomena such as neuronal plasticity and the myelination of axons are key examples.

Neurodevelopmental and learning disorders

Neurodevelopmental disorders, which include learning disorders, are conditions affecting the development and maturation of the central nervous system (CNS), causing significant difficulties with learning, children’s social and psychological development.

These disorders have a neurobiological basis with a strong genetic component, and tend to persist throughout life. Their symptoms can vary in intensity and presentation at different stages of development and depending on the maturation of the central nervous system (CNS).

The dynamic process of neurodevelopment involves a complex interaction between the child, their environment and genetics. Characterised by dysfunctions of the CNS, these disorders usually appear in childhood, with symptoms that can be difficult to detect due to the lack of biological markers. In addition, the similarity of symptoms across different neurodevelopmental disorders and their frequent comorbidity can make it difficult to distinguish between a disorder and typical development.
